Ear Acupuncture - NADA Acupuncture Protocol

NADA Acupuncture, also known as 5 Needle Protocol and Ear Acupuncture, was developed at the Lincoln Detox Center in the Bronx, New York in the 1970’s. The protocol was based in part on the research of a Chinese Neurosurgeon, Dr. H.L. Wen, who studied the effect of needling the Ear Lung Acupuncture point in treating opioid withdrawal.

The 5 Needle Protocol uses needles in the ear on points which correspond with organs of detoxification: the Kidney point, the Liver point and the Lung point. These points have been identified by French and Chinese studies which mapped neurological correlations between points on the ear and anatomical structures. In addition, the Kidney point helps soothe fear and integrate trauma. The Liver point helps with sleep and calms anger. The Lung point is helpful for integrating feelings of sadness and loss. The other points used are the Shen Men point which has an overall relaxing effect. Sympathetic point, which treats both branches of the Autonomic Nervous System is also used. The Sympathetic Nervous System regulates the fight / flight response. The Parasympathetic Nervous System is responsible for calming, rest, and digestion. Both parts of the Sympathetic nervous system are treated when the Sympathetic point is needled.

When the 5 Needle protocol is given in a group setting, it enhances the  sense of support participants feel because they are receiving treatment together and some bodily functions synchronize. Participants report, better sleep, energy, decreased pain, and an improved ability to participate in therapy and recovery. The acupuncturist may add additional ear or body points that treat conditions specific to the particular patient.

Anita Shelton LAc and Melissa Yaden LAc are now volunteering to offer Ear Acupuncture at The Recovery Cafe in Port Townsend on Tuesdays from 10 - 12. There is no charge. Ear acupressure using small beads that are taped on acupuncture points on the ear is also available for people who don’t want needles.
